British India
Ever since we arrived in Adelaide, the
three of us had been dying to try British India – a Indian-British fusion
restaurant in the city. So, with time running out, we decided to make the
long awaited trip.
The restaurant is all dark mahogany, animal
heads and rich paintings of the British soldiers and Indian Maharajas. We were lead through a maze of dimly lit tables and chattering diners and were seated next to the
fire, left to peruse the mouth-watering menu.
We ordered a rich merlot from the Barossa
Valley to toast our year abroad which we sipped on before our starters arrived.
Bagain Stack Eggplant Fritters piled with
tomato, sesame and tamarind confit, with yogurt sauce.
Lamb cutlet spiced, marinated and baked,
served with apple and date coleslaw.
They were all incredible and I could have just been given mounds of each to keep me quiet all night but as soon as we’d polished off those
delectable bites, the mains were swiftly brought out.
Butter chicken.
Braised Beef Cheeks.
We decided the butter chicken was the best
but both the beef dishes were still delicious.
In fact, this was one of the best meals I’ve
had in Australia. There’s not a lot of Indian restaurants in Adelaide –
Chinese, Japanese and South East Asian cuisine are much more popular in ‘straya
– but this place really goes above and beyond.
If you’re around, this is a MUST. It’s not
expensive despite the high quality and the staff are friendly and attentive.
Easily the best Indian I’ve had in Australia and one of the best I’ve ever had. Find them on Morphett Street and check out the full menu (and their sister restaurant Thali Room) here!
