Weekly Inspo: Bumper Edition
Right, I know that I said I was going to make this a weekly thing but all these deadlines just appeared out of nowhere so instead I've compiled a big bumper issue of inspiring things that have kept me distracted from my actual work.
So when you are at your most busy, go make yourself a cuppa, grab some snacks and settle down for some good, old-fashioned procrastination.
First up this clever eTalk about food marketing. 'That's not very interesting!' I hear you cry but I can assure you that by the end of this video you'll be thinking very differently about where your food comes from. An important one to watch.
You might have already seen me tweet about this next one. It's John Pilger's latest documentary looking at racism within Australia and the appalling treatment of their Indigenous peoples. It's a harrowing, eye-opening watch so prepare some tissues and your soapbox. Don't be put off by the heavy subject matter, it's a very accessible film breaking down some complicated issues that are, shockingly, very much swept under the carpet at both a national and an international level. This is a topic that particularly interests me and I could reel off a list of facts for you but I think it's summed up pretty neatly by a quote from the documentary which asks 'if this were happening in South Africa people would be up in arms so why is it ok to be happening in Australia?'. The last time I checked it was still on SBS catch up and Youtube for all of you living outside Australia but is also available to buy on DVD and may even be playing at a theatre near you. If you're going to watch any of the clips here, make sure it's this one - it should be compulsory viewing for all. On a much lighter note, I've been staring open mouthed at Morgan Maassen's collection of stunning films created out on the open water. This one of Frankie Harrer, a 16 year old surfer, is particularly good and has me begging to jump into the beautiful blue ocean of Hawaii.
Other short films feeding my desire to get travelling again include both this short look at the beautiful island of Koh Yao Noi, one of the least developed in Thailand, and some of its cheeky inhabitants...
...and this peek at 'Somewhere in Vietnam'.
Next up is one of my favourites in this selection. I find Cory Richards' work hugely inspiring. His photographs are truly breathtaking (particularly his portraits) which convey so much truth and feeling. If there is anyone who can make me even more passionate for travel than I already am, it's this guy. You can find all of his work on his website or just pick up a National Geographic.
Rémi Chapeaublanc is another incredible photographer, again specialising in portraiture - my fave! His project 'Gods and Beasts' is pretty insane and this film is a wonderful look through his creative eyes. Find out more about his work here.
Another film I found to be pretty darn good is this look at human intolerance. Very simple but extremely effective.
A theme that's popped up a few times in my desperate attempt to find something more fun than essays is love.
'An Awesome Book of Love' is quite possibly the cutest, most adorable and heartfelt look at love and the book that voiced what it's really all about.
Whilst this one addresses the realities of age differences as part of a series on modern love from the New York Times.
These final few videos are all interesting takes on skateboarding. I remember being about 8 years old and watching the boys mess about on their boards thinking it was really cool and wishing they'd let me have a go. Every so often I'll catch a skating film and I'll be drawn back to that moment - this is one of those times! So here's a little selection of my current faves...maybe it's time for me to get a board of my own?
